Testing Gaia GPS on iPhone 7plus on 5040 peak

I had a trip to 5040 on Sept 2, 2017. One of the purpose of this trip is to test smart phone as GPS for backcountry trips. I relied on Gaia App on an iPhone 7plus for two whole days. About 5040  Cobalt lake was unbelievable. Comparing to the summit, I enjoyed the lake more. The temperature was probably between 20 to 30+ for the three days. We didn't use our tent fly. Air was dry. Washed a shirt. It's dry over night. About Gaia I have only seen my friends using GPS handhold devices. I have waited for better options for years. I have always hoped that my smart phone can do the same. I finally decided to test this idea. I have relied on my iPhone 7plus as GPS on this trip, I think Gaia on an iPhone meets my need of a GPS. My two concerns were, battery life, and robustness. To save the battery, I turn the airplane mode on, also the phone has power saving mode. Which turned off some background process according to the help message below that setting. During this trip, I

Manchu Thumb Ring - Cylindrical Thumb Ring

Image
I started practising archery since Feb 2017. My three finger release was unclear. So I started to read about thumb releases. After comparing the common thumb ring and manchu thumb ring, manchu thumb ring is more interesting to me. - Cylindrical thumb ring is not interfering with hand function as much as the Mughal thumb ring. - Can be wear on both hands as the same time. I am training to shoot with both hands. - May have somewhat cleaning release than Mughal thumb ring. - Works as two rings: for warm and cold weather. Thumb size changes when temperature changes. Since the ring is not exact circle. It's more ellipse. When the thumb is thicker, it works as "A" shown in the drawing below. When temperature is low, and the thumb is thinner, I turn the ring to "B" position. It still grip well. Here is what I learned in a few weeks. Resources: - How to use a Manchu ring . - This youtube Size: - The hight of the thumb ring, it works the best if it matche

For Ray

Writing is a better way for collecting my thoughts. I hope this doesn't sounds like preaching. Life is full of challenges. It's a waste that everyone has to start with a blank sheet. Each generation have to learn the same lessons, make the same mistakes. What life taught me can't be passed to you easily. Not only they can't be passed on, it's also so much to pass on from one generation to the next. On the other hand, life would be boring if you knew everything from birth. Maybe mistakes have to be made so that we are not bored to death.  Everyone walks ones own path, experiences what one needs to experience. No one is able to take your place. When you need help, I bet you that you will always find them. I have found mine when I needed them, from books, videos, and people.  I am hoping that this post is one of those helps, and a place we can all revisit. Here are a few things worth mentioning. You may already know.  What matters?   Only a f

When you do something, you should burn yourself up completely, like a good bonfire, leaving no trace of yourself. - Shunryu Suzuki-roshi Alan Watts, he reaches even deeper, investigating ideas of personal identity and the existence of the ego as an entity separate from the rest of reality. Returning to his grand theme of interconnectedness, Watts assures us it’s “impossible to cut ourselves off from the social environment, and also furthermore from the natural environment. We are that; there’s no clear way of drawing the boundary between this organism and everything that surrounds it.” But in order to discover this essential truth, says Watts, we must become “deep listeners” and let go of embarrassment, shyness, and anxiety.

Job's saying about awareness

"If you just sit and observe, you will see how restless your mind is. If you try to calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm, and when it does, there's room to hear more subtle things--that's when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present more. Your mind just slows down, and you see a tremendous expanse in the moment. You see so much more than you could see before."

Nobody can hurt you without your permission. Mahatma Gandhi

I wonder at what situation when Gandhi said this. Could it be someone need protection. This is about the freedom of you mind. Pain is what your mind does to you. It's the choice of your mind. What is real? What your mind believe is real is real. Think about placebo effect, think about social status. Social status, it is such a illusive thing, a thing made up by people's mind. http://www.health.harvard.edu/press_releases/oscar_winners When a bad situation happens, one often feel helpless. Sometimes, become angry towards some one, some may have self pity. It's common that one will a flood of all of these feelings. But is a situation good or bad? Without our mind, situation means nothing. The same thing could be good to someone, and yet bad to others. Even to the same person, a situation can mean different things at different time. Think about you got that dream job, and you were still doing the same thing after 20 years. Trust me, not even a king or a president
